In the days since the Israeli government was pushed into action by the Radical Islamists of Hamas and Hezbollah I have been fascinated and dismayed by the coverage on TV. I will not attempt to explain the left leaning coverage of ABC, CBS, NBC or even CNN. I cannot comment on these networks because I simply do not watch them. I have been watching FOX News almost exclusively ( I do look at the local news on occasion) for years. I used to expect them to be better than the rest but they have degraded to a point of being CNN like in their coverage of sensational stories like last years Katrina and this years Middle East conflict.
You have one reporter who will tell you that he is unable to show where a Katusha rocket landed due to Israeli censorship and in the same instant, point out that just moments ago two Katushas landed directly behind him and one just in front of his position. It wouldn't take much of an artillery man to figure that five minutes ago, he fired a rocket and three minutes ago a rocket landed very near where he was aiming. He could then make an adjustment or two and fire again, this time with better hope for success.
Then you have reporter 2. He spent last fall lamenting the horrors of Katrina and the absolute bloodbath that was taking place inside the New Orleans SuperDome. This guy hears a boom in the backround and ducks. As if, just by lowering his head 1 or 2 feet he has saved his life. Today he has given us his view on the Israeli offensive against Hezbollah. Again, like last years hurricane and the U.S. Government's failed strategy to help, he knows instinctively that the IDF's air campaign is not being effective enough and will have to be followed by some sort of ground offensive. Well no kidding. Only a few arrogant Generals and apparently the great military minds reporting for Fox think that air power alone can drive an enemy from well fortified positions. It always comes down to people on the ground shooting and dying to drive out defenders. In the back of reporter 2's head he believes the Israelis are hoping to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon and then the U.N. will ride in on white horses and protect them. (just a note to this amiable ninny, the U.N is virulently anti-Israeli)
Reporters for Fox fall into the same traps as the other networks I suppose. They hear a word or phrase and then, in the words of the brilliant minds on American Idol they "make it theirs". This year it is most likely Katusha. A Katusha is a simple rocket, you point it, launch it and hope for the best. To the reporters on Fox and I suppose the other networks now, everything that flies through the air and then explodes is a dreaded Katusha. Last year everyone on a bus in Louisiana and Texas was refugee lucky to have escaped the anarchy that was post Katrina New Orleans. What will it be next year? I guess whether it is Fair and Balanced News or the Weekly World News, if it bleeds it leads. Too bad the reporters in the field cannot simply report the facts and leave policy and strategy to others.
God Bless America
